I mean, I liked to go fast, but Carlos was on a tear. “Jeez, slow down, Tex. I actually heard burnt rubber on that turn.”

“You recognize that car back there?” He murmured, his stare locked on the rearview mirror, a grim expression on his face.

I turned to look and exclaimed, “Shit. That’s my dad! Do you think he saw me?”

“I think he’s been following us since we left the drug store. And he’s not alone.”

Our last stop before heading back to the Diamante was to pick up my prescription for birth control. Carlos growled when the doctor told us that they would take seven days to work.

Seven more days without him inside me.

I didn’t know how I’d last. But with my dad following us, I’d be lucky to see the light of day ever again let alone be allowed to continue my period of Shangri La with Carlos.

I knew it had been too good to be true, but that didn’t stop my stomach from plummeting to the floorboards over the thought that it could all be over very soon.

The side mirror revealed that my dad was gripping the steering wheel as if he was trying to strangle it, and he grit his teeth.

“He’s not alone. You might as well pull over and see what he wants. He won’t give up.” With all the civility and patience in the world, Carlos pulled over to the side of the road, and turned the car off.

“Gabriela.” My father said, his eyes hard and flinty, and he slammed his car door shut behind him.

This time, his scorn grated on my last nerve.

“Father. What are you doing here?” I bit out.

“I’m here to tell you there is a priest waiting along with family members. Ready to see the two of you wed.”

All around, the birds stopped singing, there was no ruffle of breeze in the trees, and the insects stopped their droning.

Inside my head, there was a high-pitched buzzing sound.

There was no time to react. Papá spun at Carlos, “You. I know you as a good soldier, a good man. So it won’t surprise you to learn that your immediate family agreed to attend the ceremony when they learned of how you’ve tainted my daughter’s reputation.”

“How so?” Carlos’ features were void of expression, not reacting to my dad’s over the top reaction which belonged in another century.
